WRLA Praises Federal Government's New Retrofit Grant

- May 28, 2021

NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 28, 2021

The Western Retail Lumber Association (WRLA) is pleased to see the federal government make significant investments in the future of energy efficient homes in Canada.

This week, the federal government announced the new Canada Greener Homes Grant, which will help up to 700,000 Canadian homeowners across the country improve the energy efficiency of their homes and reduce their energy bills through an investment of $2.6 billion over seven years.

Homeowners will be able to receive grants of up to $5,000 to make energy efficient retrofits to their primary residences, and up to $600 to help with the cost of home energy evaluations. Eligible home improvements and upgrades include replacing windows and doors, adding insulation, sealing air leaks, improving heating and cooling systems – such as with heat pumps – and purchasing renewable energy systems like solar panels.

“The WRLA has been advocating for programs like this to support Canadians and our industry. We are thrilled to see that the federal government is supporting Canadians in making necessary changes to their homes for a greener future. Our members are eager to support these important projects,” says Liz Kovach, WRLA president. "As our industry is still facing significant supply issues, we are pleased to see this program's length so our members can support this great initiative in the years to come."

To support this new initiative, the federal government announced they will recruit and train up to 2,000 new energy advisors to help provide guidance, advice and timely evaluations to Canadians.

The government says the Canada Greener Homes Grant is retroactive to December 1, 2020.
