Job Description:

Position Summary:


The Expeditor / Inside Sales (EIS) person is a core service person to the business. Their primary purpose is to place and follow up on orders from both internal and external customers. The EIS is to maintain strong customer relationships with existing customers while developing new customers by offering professional, effective, and efficient solutions. The EIS promotes and sells existing and new products to meet Dick’s Lumber’s sales objectives. This position is highly transactional but also requires a depth of product and construction knowledge to gain credibility with the customers.

 

Responsibilities:

  • This is a full-time career orientated position and expected to be the employee’s primary job.
  • Be the primary point of contact and develop a professional relationship with both internal and external customers to build trust and loyalty towards Dick’s Lumber & Building Supplies.
  • Keep current on assigned customers projects.  Use information to provide a “value add” to the sales transaction by anticipating customer requirements, recommending additional products, and working to maximize the sales opportunity.
  • Make sure customers receive requested products and services in a timely fashion.
  • Follow up with customers to ensure satisfaction.
  • Resolve customer complaints and objections including investigating, interpreting policy, and taking the appropriate action to ensure customer satisfaction.  Refer difficult situations to Branch Manager.
  • Represent Dick’s Lumber & Building Supplies in a professional manner and ensure that the customer is treated with the utmost respect and courtesy.
  • Be aware of all building permits that are being issued in the Dick’s Lumber & Building Supplies trading area.
  • Maintain a connection with the designers, shipping, and other departments to ensure a smooth and problem free supply of products and services for the customer.
  • Use knowledge in aiding in the development of other Dick’s Lumber & Building Supplies staff members.
  • Participate in company’s initiatives to grow and develop Dick’s Lumber’s & Building Supplies business.
  • Aide in the establishment of annual objectives and budgets.
  • Work daily to achieve set objectives and budgets.
  • When called upon, fill in for other staff members as needed or scheduled.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of three (3) years sales and customer service experience in the lumber, building materials or construction industry.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point) and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Strong knowledge of industry products, architectural/structural plans, and industry trends.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills. Must be able to communicate and interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of a second language would be advantageous.

  • Position requires the incumbent to always present a professional sales image to the customer.
  • Dress to be in Dick’s Lumber logoed attire (collared shirt) and or business professional attire.
  • Requires close attention to details.
  • Ability to process a high volume of transactions in a timely manner.
  • Some pressure and stress are related to various timelines.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Availability will be during store operating hours. Circumstances may dictate where some evenings and weekends are necessary.
  • Travel Time: Job will require less than 10% of the time to be on the road servicing and meeting customers or potential customers.
  • Busy, high-volume environment.
  • In many areas safety equipment such as steel toe shoes, eye, ear and head protection and safety vests are required.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, and debris in the lumber yard.

  • Provide appropriate information on suggested products and alternatives explaining features and benefits and providing application advice as required.  Suggest add-ons to complete the sale.
  • Maintain a listing of all assigned customers and their quotes, updating regularly.  Advise Credit Department of potential changes to account or updates to account information.
  • Price volume orders as per guidelines, considering quantity, delivery, and load building requirements.  Use Dick’s Lumber Quote page to present prices to customers.  Receive approval for exceptions to price guidelines from management.
  • Prepare special orders, obtain the required information and specifications from customer, contact vendors to establish and confirm price and available delivery date.  Coordinate direct shipment or pick up from vendor.
  • Be aware of all changes to the local, provincial, and federal building codes.
  • Attend and participate in product knowledge sessions when offered, to expand knowledge base and liaise with other staff members.
  • Maintain superior knowledge of Dick’s Lumber & Building Supplies products and offerings along with competitive offerings and prices; provide customers with assistance in understanding specific products and services.
  • Source products from multiple vendors; source, price and promote special order products.
  • Continuous job tracking, reporting on wins, losses, and upcoming work.
  • Develop a list of leads and future projects for follow up.
  • Do all Price Previews on a daily schedule, submitting prior to 9:00 a.m. the day after shipped.
  • Take and place customer orders via customers’ preferred methods (phone/text/email/fax).
  • Prepare warehouse transfers and special orders when needed.
  • Provide a report to the Director of Sales & Marketing on daily activities.
