Internship Programs

The Supply-Build Canada Rising Star Internship Program, presented by Star Building Materials, a Qualico Company

In order for business to grow their teams also need to grow, but how can you be sure that you’re making the right choice for your team? Internships are a great way for individuals to gain experience in the industry and for employers to refine their onboarding and determine if someone is a good fit prior to committing to a permanent hire. For these reasons, we have developed The Supply-Build Canada Rising Star Internship, presented by Star Building Materials, a Qualico Company.

The goal of this internship program is to offer all members the potential to grow their teams through internship and in doing so invest in the future of their business, their staff, and the industry as a whole. See below for current internship opportunities by province:

Alberta

We have a youth internship partnership with Careers Alberta which is currently based out of Calgary and Edmonton, but has connections province-wide. The internship program can be tailored to your business’ needs and timelines in order to ensure success. For example, this year Star Building Materials will be hosting internships from June-August, with the first few weeks of the Internship focused on at home learning about Building Materials Fundamentals and other requirements as needed depending on the jobs involved. July and August will feature two three-week rotations, each with three students, through different jobs on site in order to give them a breadth of experience. Alberta offers the possibility of having these student wages covered, ask us for more details!

Saskatchewan

We are also currently setting up another youth internship program with Scott Collegiate in Saskatchewan. They have an internship program where pairs of youth will do an internship as part of their credits towards graduation. We have a few interested members already in the area and are always open to more! There is the possibility of having these student wages covered through a government grant, ask us for more details!

Manitoba

Last but not least, we are in the early stages of developing an internship program (to be piloted out of Manitoba initially) for adults. We are developing plans with Manitoba job seeker organizations who help newcomers to Canada and those in career transition. Our plan is to develop an internship of about 3-6 months (with roughly 2 weeks spent learning skills prior to starting on the floor) with interested members in order to ensure a well-trained and confident start for new hires to lay a solid foundation for growing a career in the industry. The roles involved in these internship roles could be in any role needed by the business involved, anything from unskilled labour through to professional roles. Currently we are building a framework and timeline to determine what financial resources would be needed to carry it out as these would need to be paid roles and there should be an opportunity for permanent employment when the internship is complete.
